How to Play GRAIN ROT - Tutorial & First Steps
GRAIN ROT tutorial: learn the controls, how to scavenge, use the Grinder, and what the cursed emote does. Beginner walkthrough for the co-op extraction horror on Steam.
Controls and perspective
GRAIN ROT is first-person, mixing survival-horror tension with base-building and a roguelike reset loop. The wiki Start Here section splits learning into Beginner, Enemies, Vessels & Loadouts, Co-op, Extraction, and Outpost, so you can absorb one system at a time instead of all at once.
Scavenging and the Grinder
You break apart furniture and environmental objects to scavenge materials as you move through the ruins. The Grinder converts that junk into currency you spend on upgrades back at the Outpost. Because interactions are physics-driven, the world reacts chaotically to your actions - stacking boxes, toppling shelves, and triggering traps are all part of the ride.
The cursed emote
A cursed emote can knock a teammate's Spark out of their Vessel. That makes it a genuine panic button when a friend is about to be corrupted, but also a chaotic prank if your crew is feeling mean. Mind your teammates before you spam it.
Your single-run goal
Each dive has a clear objective: grab what you can, survive the Corrupted, and extract before things go wrong. Over-looting is the most common way a run ends badly, so set a personal extraction threshold before you push deeper.
Learning curve tips
New players should prioritize learning the extraction timer and the safe routes back to the Outpost before experimenting with deeper layers. The demo alone drew 350,000+ downloads, so the community has already mapped a lot of the early-game rhythm worth copying.
